In MOV, MP4, M4A, M4V and MP3, various information such as "Title," "Artist," and "Album" can be recorded. These are called 'metadata'. There are various formats for metadata, with ID3 tags (ID3v1 and ID3v2) being commonly known. ID3 tags have become the de facto standard for MP3 metadata. However, MOV, MP4, M4A and M4V file formats do not support it. Instead, formats "iTunes", "QuickTime" and "User" are defined for them. Although "iTunes" and "QuickTime" share names with their respective apps (iTunes being the current Music and TV apps), they are primarily used within their own apps and are not directly related.

App Metadata Handling Variations
MOV, MP4, M4A, M4V and MP3 can record multiple metadata formats simultaneously. However, different apps handle metadata differently.
The following example shows which format each app displays contents of metadata with MOV.
App | iTunes | QuickTime | User |
---|---|---|---|
Music (ver. 1.4.5.36) | ✓ | Unrecognized | Unrecognized |
TV (ver. 1.4.5.36) | ✓ | Unrecognized | Unrecognized |
QuickTime Player (ver. 10.5) | ✓ (2) | ✓ (1) | ✓ (3) |
Finder (ver. 14.5) | ✓ (3) | ✓ (1) | ✓ (2) |
❊ The numbers in brackets indicate the priority of the format.
❊ That may change with app version updates.
Note:
The metadata of videos captured with the standard iPhone camera is in QuickTime format. If you want to import the videos to Music or TV, write in the iTunes format. Even if you write any metadata item in QuickTime format, it will not be displayed on these apps.
There are two types of editing mode.
- Basic Editing Mode
This mode is designed for editing frequently used basic items and allows for batch editing of items of the same content type without distinction of the metadata formats. - Advanced Editing Mode
This mode is intended for detailed editing of items defined for each metadata format.

Or drag the file(s) to the app icon.
Select the edited file(s) in the sidebar and choose File > Save.
Or choose File > Save All.
The edited sign appears next to the edited items. Clicking the sign restores the metadata item to its last saved state.
If you want to edit multiple files at a time, select the files in the sidebar, and then proceed with editing...
The button appears next to the items Track, Movement and TV Episode Number when multiple files are selected in the sidebar. Clicking the button shows the sheet to set sequential numbers.
